Nearly 300 of the Kingdom’s top real estate professionals gathered to celebrate the best of the best in the Cambodia property sector at Sofitel Phokeethra Phnom Penh on February 25.

This inaugural event in the Cambodian real estate industry was also attended by the Secretary of State Ministry for Land Management, Urbanisation and Construction, HE Dr. Pen Sophal, representative of HE Senior Minister Im Chhun Lim, whose keynote speech praised the achievements of the Cambodian property and construction industries.

The awards ceremony saw 13 awards given to 15 of the best developers and developments in Cambodia, including one for Worldbridge Land chairman Rithy Sear, who was named Real Estate Personality of the Year by the editors of Property Report, the only award not voted on by the judging panel.

The Borey Penghuoth Group collected five awards, winning in all the categories in which it was shortlisted: Best Developer (Cambodia), Best Residential Development (Cambodia), Best Housing Development (Phnom Penh), Best Residential Architectural Design (Low-Rise), and Special Recognition in Corporate Social Responsibility. The Phnom Penh firm will be moving on to the grand finals at the Southeast Asia Property Awards 2016 in Singapore in November.

“We’re very happy for these awards,“ said Thay Chea Houth, the group’s president. “We will do our best to build and maintain our reputation so we can compete again at the Cambodia Property Awards. We see a very good future for the Cambodian property sector.”

Last year saw massive growth in the industry with around $33 billion of construction projects getting the go-ahead in Cambodia, a 33 percent increase on the previous year. With Cambodia’s property development sector growing at a such a pace, the country’s leading developers are creating a competitive market.

“Cambodia now joins the other leading economies of ASEAN in hosting its own awards programme,” said Terry Blackburn, founder of the Asia Property Awards programme. “It is a testament to the strength and quality of the local industry that we have so many fine developments on the shortlist.”

The Winners and Highly Commended were chosen by an independent panel of leading experts from all fields of the industry, chaired by Simon Griffiths of CBRE Cambodia, and supervised by BDO, one of the world’s largest accounting firms.
